Helldivers 2 Developer Explains Use of Kernel-Level Anti-Cheat on PC Version

In light of player criticism from its use of the notorious GameGuard anti-cheat in Helldivers 2, developer Arrowhead Game Studios has released a statement explaining its use of the anti-cheat system, and especially why the studio went with the kernel-level GameGuard anti-cheat system. The developer kicks things off by explaining that, while GameGuard is a kernel-level anti-cheat software that could even be classified as a rootkit, it’s one of the more effective ways that the studio can combat cheating. The studio also emphasises that GameGuard will not stay installed on a player’s PC if the game has been uninstalled, and that the anti-cheat doesn’t collect sensitive information about players, following global laws for user privacy like Europe’s GDPR. Responding to questions about why Helldivers 2 even needs an anti-cheat system, considering the game is a purely co-op game with no competitive aspects to it, technical director Peter Lindgren talks about wanting to prevent cheaters

Helldivers 2 Will “Probably” Add Cross-Progression “Sometime in the Future”

The level of success that Helldivers 2 is enjoying has been as surprising for us to see as it has been for the people who made it, and given how popular the shooter has proven, it’s no surprise that developer Arrowhead Game Studios is pivoting to much more ambitious post-launch plans. An entirely new roadmap is in the works, with free new content like enemies, biomes, objectives, and story updates having been previously promised. On top of that, as you may have guessed, you can also probably expect some smaller scale but no less crucial updates in terms of new features- like cross-saves and cross-progression (but certainly not PvP). Upon being asked on Twitter about whether Helldivers 2 will be adding cross-play, Arrowhead Game Studios CEO Johan Pilestedt said that though that wasn’t originally the plan, given the massive and unexpected influx of players, a “significant” portion of it wants cross-progression, it’s likely that the feature eventually ends up being added to the game.
